Collaboration with Dilasa (IMA Ponda Charitable Trust)

In 2019, Prateek Menezes Memorial Foundation (PMMF) had collaborated with Tata Memorial Hospital to start Child Palliative Care Centre in Goa. More recently, Prateek Menezes Memorial Foundation (PMMF) has collaborated with Dr. Vallabh Dhaimodkar and Dilasa (a project in hospice care by IMA Ponda Charitable Trust) and supported a programme/workshop on Palliative Care entitled ‘Palliative Care- The Need of the Hour’ held on 20 October 2024.

The Trustees, on perusing through the abstracts of the Resource Persons at the Workshop, observed that Morphine is an opoid analgesic, mostly used in palliative care where the goal is to improve the quality of life and give more comfort to the patient. However, the process of obtaining the license for Morphine is very complex and involves the Department of Excise, Food & Drug Administration (FDA) and Ministry of Health. They had a point of view that this aspect may be highlighted, especially for the medical fraternity, and this could be taken forward in future workshops.

It is also the opinion of the Trustees of PMMF that line between palliative care and active treatment is extremely thin and, hence, it is very important for professional doctors to approach this subject in a very sensitive way as, at this stage of the illness, the child patient and their family are also experiencing ‘an existential crisis’, and this may be expressed, in future conferences/workshops, by parents who have lost their young child/children to cancer.
